Why prep matters
Why does a paint job look wrong when the paint is fine?
A paint job fails when nobody filled, sanded or primed first. A roller does not hide a screw head, a gouge or a rough seam. Wet paint sits on top of them and makes them easier to see. A bare patch drinks the first coat and dries dull. A seam that was never sanded shows as a ridge the moment light crosses the wall. A gap along the trim is still a gap once it is painted.
None of that is a paint problem. It is a prep problem, and it was settled before the can was opened. Zach treats the prep as its own part of the job. He fills the damage, sands it smooth, caulks the trim lines and primes the bare spots, and only then does he paint.
That order holds in every room of a Burlington house: repair first, paint last.
“Zach recently completed a project in my living room that involved hanging new sheetrock, painting the walls, and painting all of the trim. … Zach paid close attention to detail, and the walls and trim came out looking absolutely beautiful.”
The prep sequence
What happens before the paint opens
Six steps, in order. Each one is finished before the next one starts.
-
Move and cover
Furniture comes away from the walls and gets covered, and the floors are protected. Everything is covered before the first patch goes on.
-
Fill and patch
Holes, gouges, cracks and failed seams are filled and patched flush with the wall. Bigger damage is a sheetrock repair first, and the paint waits for it.
-
Sand
Every patch is sanded smooth, and rough or glossy spots on the wall are scuffed so the paint has a surface to hold. The wall should feel even under a flat hand.
-
Caulk the trim lines
Gaps where the walls meet the baseboards, the casings and the ceiling are caulked. This is what keeps the lines clean once the paint is on.
-
Prime the bare patches
Patched spots and bare drywall get primer before the color goes on, so they do not dry dull and show through the finished wall.
-
Cut in
Edges are cut in by hand along the ceiling, the trim and the corners. The open wall is rolled after that.
Scope
What gets painted
-
Walls
Patched, sanded, primed where it is needed and rolled out edge to edge.
-
Before, left. After, right.
Ceilings
Cracks, stains and damaged spots are repaired and primed first, then the ceiling is painted so the repair does not show.
-
Trim and doors
Baseboards, casings and doors get the same fill, sand and caulk as the walls, so the lines come out clean.
-
Whole rooms after a repair
After a repair, the whole wall or room is painted, not just the patch, so the fix blends in.

Cleans up after himself

-
Shows up when he says he will
Reviewers say he arrives when he said he would, and that he lets them know ahead of time when a day has to change.
-
Explains the work
Customers say he explains the process and answers their questions, so there is nothing to guess about what happens in the room.
Questions
Questions about interior painting
How is interior painting priced in Burlington?
Interior painting in Burlington is quoted from the rooms and the condition of the walls, so this page lists no prices. What moves a quote is how much patching and sanding the walls need, how many ceilings, doors and trim lines are involved, and whether furniture has to be moved. Request a quote and describe the rooms.
Does Zach patch and prep before he paints?
Yes. For interior painting in Burlington, the prep comes first. Zach fills holes and cracks, sands the patches smooth, caulks the trim lines and primes bare spots before any paint opens. If the damage is bigger than a patch, it becomes a sheetrock repair first, and the paint waits for it.
Does he move the furniture?
Yes. Moving and covering is the first step of interior painting in Burlington homes. Furniture comes away from the walls and gets covered, and the floors are protected before anything is patched or sanded. Mention anything unusually heavy when you request a quote so it is planned for.
Does he paint trim and doors?
Yes. Baseboards, casings and doors are part of interior painting in Burlington, and they get the same filling, sanding and caulking as the walls. The trim lines are where careful prep shows most, so they are finished before any color goes on.
Which towns does Zach cover for painting?
Zach paints interiors in Burlington, Colchester, Richmond, Montpelier, Northfield and Randolph in Vermont, and in Plattsburgh, New York. If your town is not on that list, ask when you request a quote and he will tell you whether he can get there.
