Ice dams and frozen pipes
The two calls that come in every January. Heat tape, insulation gaps, a pipe on an outside wall that should never have been run there, and the ceiling stain underneath once it thaws.
Repairs, carpentry and cleaning for Randolph and central Vermont. The furthest we go regularly, and worth saving the list for.
Randolph sits at the far end of where we work, down in central Vermont, and we are straight with people about that: jobs here get grouped so the drive makes sense. It means timing is sometimes a few days rather than next morning, and it means this is the best place on our list to go in with a neighbor.
The housing is rural and older on the whole. Farmhouses, village homes around the center, outbuildings, and the sort of maintenance list that builds up quietly over a few winters rather than arriving as one emergency.
That list is exactly what to call about. One sticking door is a long way to drive. A door, a run of trim, two rooms to paint, a deck board and a deep clean is a day well spent for both of us.
Gifford and the businesses around the center mean there is small commercial work here too, not just houses.

Frost heave on steps and walks, a storm door that no longer shuts, water stains to trace and seal, and the deep clean once the sand and salt stop coming through the door.
Vermont gives you a short window for anything outside. Decks, siding, exterior paint, carpentry and the bigger repairs all get booked into it, so earlier is better.
Gutters, draft sealing, storm windows, loose boards and the repairs you do not want to be making in February. Cheaper now than after the first thaw.
We also cover Northfield, Montpelier, Bethel and Brookfield.
